Lockheed Martin, machinists union reach tentative agreement; end of 2-month strike in sight

FORT WORTH, Texas - The two-month machinists' strike at Lockheed Martin appears to be nearing an end.

Company officials say Lockheed and the union representing 3,600 striking employees reached a tentative agreement late Saturday. Both sides had been meeting since Wednesday.

The company and union negotiators have not disclosed terms of the tentative agreement. The union is expected to vote this week.

Fort Worth-based Machinists Local 776 went on strike April 23 after rejecting Lockheed's latest contract offer.

Union members said they opposed the company's proposed changes to health care and pension plans, including eliminating pensions for newly hired workers.

Most striking workers are at the Fort Worth plant where F-35 stealth fighter jets are made. Others work at Edwards Air Force Base in California and the Naval Air Station in Patuxent River, Maryland.
