Blue bin motion coming before town council

Sundre town councillors are scheduled to consider a motion at that this week’s governance committee meeting regarding the proposed Mountain View Regional Waste Commission blue bin program.

If accepted the proposal could see Sundre purchase 1,025 blue bins at a cost of not more than $76,875.

A proposed motion on the governance committee meeting agenda calls for the matter to be brought up before the August 20 council meeting for a vote.

Under the program, 95-gallon blue bins would be distributed to households. The bins would be used to collect recyclables, which would be processed instead of going to the landfill.

The town conducted an online resident survey regarding the program, asking residents for comments on a number of related questions. In all, 117 surveys were received back by the town.

The survey was also available in the town’s Round Up page and at request at the town office.

The survey results were expected to be presented to councillors during this week’s governance committee meeting.

“Administration did receive a number of comments along with the survey, the majority of which were completely against any increase in taxes for either purchasing the blue bin or pickup of recycling,” administration said in a note to council.

“A number of respondents also suggested that the life of the landfill could be extended without the blue bin program, with increased education and improving the existing recycling depot site.”
