Sundre cadet earns key leadership role

Sundre Army Cadet Master Warrant Officer (MWO) Nicholas Botham will play a key leadership role in Vernon this summer. C/MWO Botham has earned one of the six positions as Group Sergeant Major (GSM) at Vernon Army Cadet Summer Training Centre (VACSTC).

Cadet MWO Botham, 18, is a member of 3025 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps, Sundre.

During the summer, more than 1100 Army, Air, and Sea Cadets from Western Canada will spend up to six weeks in the Okanagan Valley training centre, expanding the training they receive at their home corps, developing new skills and forming friendships.

This summer, 119 staff cadets have been hired to assist with the training. Of these, six have earned the position of GSM at VACSTC. Each of them has excelled as a course cadet in previous years and has demonstrated a strong leadership ability in order to be recommended for the position.

Botham, who has been an army cadet for six years, said: “I have learned a lot about leadership and working with groups of people. I was kind of shy before I joined cadets.”

Similar responses were received from each of the GSMs, and it is a common thread amongst all of the staff cadets who have earned a position at the training centre.

Cadet MWO Botham also has solid plans for his future as well. He plans to attend university with the goal of becoming an engineer, perhaps in the field of military equipment design.

This summer, each will work closely with the officers, non-commissioned members and other staff cadets to provide leadership and training to the hundreds of course cadets they will command each day as they pass on their experiences, skills and attitudes.
