Rodeo a hit with fans and competitors despite rain
The 2012 Sundre Professional Rodeo was a big hit, despite rainy weather and muddy infield conditions, says first-year president Scott Smith.
“Even with the rain we had some exceptional competition,” said Smith. “We didn’t get sun throughout all the performances but we certainly had some great rodeo action throughout the weekend.
“The infield held up. We were a little concerned about our infield, but our grounds crew did an exceptional job for us. And sometimes it’s a little nice to have some mud, which makes it a little wilder for the fans. There was definitely some mud flying.”
Overall attendance was probably very close to 2011 levels, with lots and lots of great competition throughout the weekend, said Smith.
“Once again the people of Sundre and area came out and supported out rodeo. We haven’t run our numbers yet, but based on our best guess estimates, we are probably on par or maybe even a little higher than last year. We had a really strong Friday. We are expecting overall we will be where we were in 2011, if not even a little higher.”
As for his rodeo as president, Smith says it all went very well.
“I learned a lot,” he said. “We’ve got some things to discuss and some notes to take away and review, but overall I though it was exceptional. The rodeo committee came through again and we are excited to regroup and start looking forward to next year.
“I think we’ve done a great rodeo and are looking forward to putting it on again next year.”
Smith says he will certainly be letting his name stand for re-election.
In bull riding, Daniel Hansen scored an 87 on FB78, winning $1,822.85. Wacey Finkbeiner and Kyle German tied for second with 86 scores and each taking home $1,329.
In saddle bronc, Dustin Flundra won with an 81.5 score, winning $1,895 on Three Colours. Wade Sundill and Cort Scheer tied for second with 80.5 scores and winning $1,381 each.
In bareback, Lachary Phillips won with an 80.5 score and winning $2,068. Dusty Lavelly finished second with a 79.5 score.
In tie down roping, Hunter Herrin had a 6.6 second time and winning $2,643. Shane Hanchey finished second with a 6.9 score and winning $2,423.
In steer wresting, Travis Carnine won with a 3.5 second time, taking home $2,664. Dane Hanna and Brock Butterfield tied for second with 3.6 second times, each taking home $2,294.
In novice saddle bronc, Lane Watt had a 76 score, winning $667.36. Royen Griffith had a 71 score, good enough for second place and a $500 cheque.
In novice bare back, Dylan Bilton had a 72.5 score, winning $512. Tanner Young had a 70 score, winning $384.
In boys steer riding, Gunnar Fuchs, Cameron Brown and Chance Barrass all tied for first, each with 71 score and each taking home $378 cheques.
In ladies barrel racing, Lindsay Sears won with a 16.234 time, winning $3,026. Lee Ann Rust finished second with a 16.276 time, good enough for a $2,421.
In team roping, Travis Tryan and Jake Long won with a 3.5 second time, each winning $1,864. Dustin Bird and Paul Eaves finished second with a 3.8 second time, each winning $1,621.
