Sundre rodeo athlete off to Wyoming
Sundre’s Trey Gallais has been named to the Alberta high school rodeo squad as a team roper.
Gallais, who is currently attending Grade 10 in Delburne, with plans to return to Sundre High School in the fall, will be joining his Alberta teammates at the 64th annual National High School Finals rodeo in Rock Springs, Wyo., from July 15 to 21.
The finals will feature more than 1,500 competitors from 41 states, five provinces, and from Australia. It is the world’s largest rodeo, with more than $200,000 in prizes available.
As well, more than $350,000 in scholarships are up for grabs.
In an interview, Gallais said he is pleased to be named to the team and is looking forward to the chance to win some prize money and maybe even a scholarship.
“I’d like to get some of that. There are prizes every night. And there are lots of scholarships,” he said.
He said he’d really like to get a scholarship to a U.S. college, and plans to pursue rodeo as a career.
Gallais has been roping since he was four years old.
“I will be roping until I’m too old to rope and ride a horse,” he said.
