There is another member of Sundre rodeo royalty this week after 16-year-old Desirae Jackson won the Alberta High School Rodeo Queen competition.

Jackson beat out two other finalists in the prestigious competition, winning eight of eight categories during the finals in Ponoka.

Jackson joins Sundre’s Arleta Bowhay, who is Miss Rodeo Canada 2012, as a member of local rodeo royalty.

“I was so excited to win,” said Jackson. “I was really surprised that I won and that I won all eight categories. I was super surprised that I beat out the others in all events.”

The contestants were judged on modeling, public speaking, personal interview, horsemanship and other things. It was Jackson’s first time competing for the Alberta High School Rodeo Queen crown.

Jackson now goes to the Nationals in Rocksprings, Wyoming in July, where she will face off against more than 40 other contestants from Canada, U.S. and Australia.

She said she is very excited to be taking part in Nationals.

“I’m excited and looking forward to the competition,” she said.

As the Alberta High School Rodeo Queen, Jackson will be making appearances at many rodeo events, including during all three days of the Sundre Professional Rodeo and Sundre rodeo parade.

Jackson is a shadow contestant in this year’s Miss Rodeo Queen pageant.

Jackson says she may want to follow in Arleta Bowhay in trying for the Miss Rodeo Canada Queen.

In other rodeo news, this year’s contest to pick Miss Rodeo Sundre and her princess has the largest number of contestants since 2007.

The six candidates running to replace outgoing Miss Rodeo Sundre Bronwen Bowhay and her princess Chelsea Mather. They are Breanna Macklin from Sundre, Taylor Grassl from Sundre, Cayley Martyn from Sundre, Alyssa Worobetz from Sundre, Mackenzie Henn from Airdrie, and Katie Schenk from Rocky Mountain House.

As in past years, this year’s contestants are being judged on a variety of categories, including personal interviews, written examinations, horsemanship, appearance, personality, punctuality, preparedness, modeling, public speaking and compatibility.

There are two contestants in this year’s Sundre Rodeo shadow contest: Desirae Jackson from Sundre and Delanie Insel from Rocky Mountain House.

The shadow program developed three years ago to allow young ladies interested in running for Miss Rodeo Sundre in future years to follow the contestants and see all of what is involved in the pageant competition.

Miss Rodeo Sundre contestant Cayley Martyn, 16, who competed in the 2011 contest, says the success of Sundre’s Arleta Bowhay in becoming Miss Rodeo Canada 2011-2012 has been an inspiration to her.

“It is encouraging me a lot,” she said. “It shows that I can maybe go on to be Miss Rodeo Canada. It is pushing me forward. I’m pretty sure the other girls are also encouraged by Arleta.

Cayley shadowed Arleta for two years before trying for the Miss Rodeo crown herself.

The 2012-2013 Miss Rodeo Sundre and the Sundre Rodeo Princess will represent the town and community at rodeo and other events across the province, including at the Sundre Bulls & Wagons weekend, at the 100th anniversary of the Calgary Stampede, at the Bowden and Carstairs parades, and at a great number of professional rodeos.
